Upon inspection, you will also find that sex toys and adult product packaging in general, contains little to no advice or information on how to share and reuse your adult sex toys safely.

Discussions with retailers and individuals responsible for marketing sex toys and adult toy products, leads us once again to a wide variety of unauthoritative responses when it comes to the safe sharing of sex products. Responses that seem to be based more on personal beliefs than any real scientific evidence.

Sharing of Sex Toys and HIV

Image that says rent a dildo, be safe when sharing sex toys!

The 2003 reporting of the first “confirmed woman to woman transmission of HIV highlights issues around the sharing of sex toys. The report links the sharing of sex toys as a potential transmission route. Yet when searching for guidelines on how to share sex toys (including dildos and vibrators) safely, a wide range of guidelines exist. Unfortunately this range often includes no guidelines at all.

This is not only an issue for women having sex with women, but all partners who share sex toys.

Guidelines for the Safe Sharing of Sex Toys

It would seem that existing guidelines on the sharing of adult toys are random at best, and not based on any official clinical guidelines or testing. They merely identify the most likely hazards and how to overcome them.

Apparently, it is the retailers of sex toys and adult products, rather than any independent health authority, that publish the few sex toy guidelines that do exist, which means that there is a real and urgent need for the development of some standard guidelines on the safer sharing and reuse of sex toys.

Tips on Sharing Sex Toys and Adult Toy Products Safely

If you share your sex toys with a loved one or sex partner, or you have the desire to switch between anal and vaginal penetration using the same object (even on yourself) it is absolutely necessary that you thoroughly clean the adult toy or object in question, so as to avoid infection.

No one wants to be introducing unfriendly bacteria into the vagina.

Condoms for the Safe Sharing of Sex Toys

The easiest and most effective way to avoid bacteria transmission when sharing sex toys between partners is to use a condom over the toy and change it whenever the toy is used for different partners or different orifices. Condoms are hygienic, fast, convenient, and will extend the life of your adult toys because it helps protect the material they are made of.

When used properly, condoms are effective 99% in the prevention of transmission of most infections. This includes vaginitis, trichomoniasis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, chancroid and HIV.

Condoms offer some protection against the human papilloma virus (HPV), which can cause genital warts, the herpes simplex virus, which causes genital herpes, and the hepatitis-B virus. Condoms do not, however, protect effectively against scabies or pubic lice.

Common Sense Sharing of Adult Toys

When it comes to the safe sharing of sex toys and other adult products, a little common sense can go a long ways to contributing to what can be a very healthy and fulfilling sex toy experience!

It would seem obvious to most, that a little common sense is the most valuable advice when it comes to the sharing of sex toys.

Try not to share adult toys with others, use your own. If you do share your sex toys with a partner, then wash them thorougly with soapy water before and after each use. Hydrogen peroxide wipes or a good intended purpose sex toy cleanser is even better, and use condoms.
